  1. As a lover of Dickens adaptations and a disliker of his worldview and his writing style (he must have been related to Hawthorne), I thought Griep did a GREAT job at capitalizing on his strengths while improving his weaknesses. It’s really just a wonderful book! I’ve found this is often true of people doing adaptations or spin-offs of books I only mildly found interesting. Austen’s Emma doesn’t do much for me in the BOOK (like the adaptations) but Barbara Cornthwaite’s retelling from Knightley’s perspective is PERFECT.
