About Better Than a Crown by Valerie Comer
Title: Better Than a Crown
Author: Valerie Comer
Series: Christmas in Montana Romance, Book 3
Publication Date: September 26, 2017
Publisher: GreenWords Media
Print Length: 162 pages
Summary from the author: As a runner-up in 27 competitions, Heather Francis tries to teach young contestants there’s more to pageants than winning, even though her mother never got that memo. It’s hard enough to focus and ignore the inner voice calling her a fraud without being attracted to Grizzly Gulch Resort’s brooding temporary chef.
Levi Esteban’s temp job as chef in Helena, Montana, and caregiver for his niece, Shelby, would be perfect if it weren’t for the Miss Snowflake Christmas festivities. Levi’s been against pageantry all his life and isn’t about to change his stance, regardless of his fascination with Shelby’s coach.
When Shelby’s parents’ trip is extended, Levi and Heather must join forces to care for her and pull off the pageant. Is there something better than a crown in their future?
When I picked up this book, I was expecting a light Christmas romance, and while I got that, I was pleasantly surprised by some moments of real depth in this book. I didn’t expect to have a lot in common with Heather as I am no beauty queen and have a fantastic relationship with my mother, but I connected with her very quickly and found her inner life quite easy to relate to. I felt I would definitely want to be friends with her in real life! I loved how both characters had such soft hearts toward the Lord and allowed Him to keep gently convincing them that they were worthy to be called His children and worthy of the lives He wanted to give them.
Another part of this story I really enjoyed was the adoption side story! The reason Levi is caring for his niece is that her parents are traveling to China to adopt a young girl. The twists and turns in their story line and the emotions Levi and his niece go through as a result were at times gut-wrenching but very real and very beautifully written.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. I enjoyed it very much and definitely recommend you add it to your Christmas TBR list this year!
